Golf courses are living, breathing things
that need constant care and attention to be at their very
best. That’s why Duncan Meadows is in such great shape.
Over the last year, its owners have spent half a million dollars
on the course and among the improvements are imported white
silica sand in all the bunkers, newly paved cart paths, and
an upgraded irrigation system.
Duncan Meadows was built on farmland and is a stand-alone
golf project, without any housing closing in on the fairways.
Under the broad shoulders of the Cowichan Valley’s Mount
Prevost, it is a true players’ layout that features
different looks on the front and back nines. The beginning
loop is links-style, mostly rolling and studded with trees,
with the occasional roller-coaster jump in elevation between
tee and green. The back nine is flatter, more parkland-style,
with especially challenging greens.
Duncan Meadow’s signature hole is the sixth, a 426-yard,
par four that kicks off with a sensational view of the valley.
It’s a knee-knocking driving hole, with ponds left and
right. Even when you find the landing zone, it’s a 150+
yard approach into a difficult green.
On the back nine, the sixteenth is a 179-yard, postcard-pretty
par three. Playing slightly downhill, the hole is shielded
by a grove of trees all around that disguise the wind conditions,
while the subtly contoured green is guarded by bunkers on
both sides. This is a shot-maker’s hole and, like the
rest of the course, it’s in immaculate condition.
Already considered by golf insiders as one of the Island’s
true undiscovered gems, with its recent improvements, Duncan
Meadows now shines even brighter.
