For golfers who haven’t
made the pilgrimage to the seaside village of Qualicum Beach
for a while, it is time for a visit. Starting in March of
2005, the former Glengarry Golf Links will officially re-emerge
as the Pheasant Glen Golf Resort. It is much more than a name
change – it’s a whole new golfing experience.
The course is 800 yards longer and three strokes harder and
is a terrific combination of brawn and finesse.
Some of the changes have already been unveiled, including
a new driving range, practice facility, and golf academy headed
up by well-known teaching professional, Brent Morrison. It
features a twenty-acre training centre with grass-tee decks,
separate putting, pitching, and chipping greens, fairway and
greenside bunkers, Dryrange Covered Units over natural grass,
video analysis, classroom instruction, and club fitting.
In 2003, the club also launched its
newly rebuilt front nine that winds through high grass, meadows,
and creeks, all framed by the peak of Mount Arrowsmith. The
back nine zigzags through a heavy stretch of Douglas fir and
features a finishing punch that may be the most memorable
in the province. The sixteenth hole is a narrow, 520-yard,
par five that dares big hitters to try for the green in two.
Go too far and the ball splashes down into the hazard that
wraps around the back of the hole. The seventeenth is a 420-yard,
par four with water squeezing the fairway on both sides of
the landing zone. The eighteenth is unique, with two separate
greens. Depending on conditions, the hole can be played at
either 535 yards or a massive 585 yards.
However you play the new Pheasant Glen Golf Resort, it’s
an outstanding addition to the Island golf scene.
